The original set up.
The Wall of Steel (originally The Monster Tower of Power) is a type of stunt used in monster truck events. The stunt features a monster truck speeding towards a ramp and smashing into a wall of stacked cars and vans. The stunt ramp is usually built into the freestyle track design and is distinguishable from the rest of the ramps on the track as it is usually smaller and less steep. Pyrotechnics are sometimes used to add effect to the stunt. A smaller version of the stunt known as the Tower of Power is sometimes during freestyle competitions as a regular obstacle.
History[]
2001[]
The first Wall of Steel stunt was performed in New Orleans in 2001 by Dennis Anderson driving the specially made Mr. Destruction. The truck's chassis featured a double roll cage design for added protection and extra bars along where the side windows were for protective mesh to fit in. Dennis performed the stunt successfully and followed up with a second stunt in Houston later on in the season.
2003[]
After a year of inactivity, the stunt returned in 2003. Mr. Destruction would be replaced by a new truck, Demolition Man, which used the same chassis. Bobby Zee would also be drafted in as the new driver for the stunt. He has done this before, as it was mentioned during his World Finals 4 freestyle. Bobby and Demolition Man first performed the stunt in St. Louis, and would subsequently perform it again in Minneapolis and San Diego.
2008[]
The stunt returned in 2008 after five years of not being featured. Here, the stunt took place at the last ever RCA Dome event in Indianapolis. Bobby Zee and Demolition Man returned to perform the stunt successfully, which was smaller than the previous versions and featured ambulances parked on the sidelines for added drama. The stunt took place before freestyle, with the ramp and wrecked cars from the stunt being used as extra obstacles for the competing trucks in the subsequent freestyle competition.
2016[]
After an eight year absence, the stunt returned in 2016 during the Monster Jam European Tour. Maximum Destruction would be the truck to perform it, doing so twice. Neil Elliott would do the stunt in Barcelona and Tom Meents would do it in Rotterdam. The design of the wall was changed to having two stacks of cars in front of one another rather than next to each other.
2019[]
At a speedway event held in Mansfield, Zane Rettew and Master of Disaster performed the stunt. The set up would be that of the original Wall of Steel layout.
2024[]
At World Finals XXIII, Kayla Blood would perform the stunt in the debuting Sparkle Smash. This was the first Wall of Steel stunt performed in Monster Jam in eight years.
