Monster Jam: Urban Assault is a video game released on October 28th, 2008, and is the spiritual sequel to Monster Jam: The Video Game as they share the same publisher (Activision) and developer (Tarus Games). The game was released for Nintendo DS, Wii, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 2. Unlike Monster Jam: The Video Game, Urban Assault did not receive a release for PC or the Xbox 360. The game has 27 playable trucks. Unlike its predecessor, Monster Jam: The Video Game, Urban Assault has the player race in more urban environments, hence the game's name. Winning in certain modes will unlock trophies and videos.

Unused trucks[]

These trucks are not featured in the actual game; however, they can be found via the in-game files from the DS version:

World Series[]

The player is given the option to select a truck and compete in stadium racing and freestyle events. Winning a competition will result in the player being advanced to the next show. Eventually, the player ends up at The World Finals.

Stadium Racing[]

Race against another competitor.

Freestyle[]

The player is given two minutes to perform in freestyle and gain points to win.

Speedster[]

The player is given the option to race against 3 other competitors in urban environments that are unlocked by winning races.

Race Circuit[]

The player races in urban environments with 5 other computer trucks. (The PS2 version has 3 competitors)

  • London Rails
  • Coastal Construction/Coastal Cruise (DS version)
  • Mall Madness/Retail Racing (DS version)
  • Warehouse War (excluding DS version)
  • Roadworks Rumble (excluding DS version)
  • Stadium Circuit (excluding DS version)
  • San Fran Streets

Eliminator[]

Race against 5 other trucks on smaller maps than those in Circuit Race. In each lap, the last truck in the pack will be eliminated. (The PS2 version has 3 competitors)

  • Crush Hour/Chicago Carnage (DS version)
  • Shopping Precinct (excluding DS version)
  • Construction Pit (excluding DS version)
  • Factory Fury (excluding DS version)
  • The Gauntlet
  • Concrete Alley (excluding DS version)

Head-to-Head[]

Race with 3 other computer trucks on smaller maps. Two trucks race in the opposite direction of the player while one races in the same direction of the player.

  • Sunset Smash (excluding DS version)
  • Downtown Demolition
  • Brooklyn Nights
  • Back Alley Brawl (excluding DS version)
  • Roadworks Rumble (excluding DS version)
  • Backyard Battle
  • Stadium Standoff (excluding DS version)

Smasher[]

Devastator[]

Destroy as much as you can in an area and rack up as much cash for repairing the area as the player can. It's very fitting to use Devastator for this event, or Destroyer or Maximum Destruction.

Air Strike[]

Launch off a ramp and destroy as much as possible.

Stuntman[]

Trickster[]

Perform as many tricks as possible.

Monster Jump[]

The player has three attempts to get as much distance and destroy as much as the player can in one jump.

Skill Jump[]

Skill Jump is essentially monster truck-sized Skee-Ball. The main objective is to race down the ramp, and aim for a certain hole. Points are given based off of how much is destroyed on the ramp and which hole the player was able to make it through.

Quick Action[]

In quick action, the player can play the following modes: Circuit Racing, Eliminator, Head-to-Head, Monster Jump, and Skill Jump.

Multiplayer[]

Circuit Racing, Head-to-Head, Stadium Racing, and Battle Royale (two players freestyle at the same time) are all available to be played with up to 3 other players.

Tracks[]

Showroom videos[]

  1. Grave Digger, Maximum Destruction (unlocked after completing 'Smasher')
  2. Iron Outlaw, Pastrana 199, Jurassic Attack, King Krunch (unlocked after completing 'Speedster')
  3. Monster Mutt, Monster Mutt Dalmatian, War Wizard, Captain's Curse, Jurassic Attack, Air Force Afterburner (removed, see trivia), Avenger (unlocked after completing 'Stuntman')
  4. El Toro Loco, Bulldozer, Black Stallion, Team Suzuki, Scarlet Bandit, Blue Thunder (unlocked after completing 'World Series')
  5. Blacksmith, Devastator. Stone Crusher, Bounty Hunter, Destroyer (unlocked after completing every movie above)

Flaws[]

  • Blacksmith is difficult to acquire; it requires playing with up to 3 other people in multiplayer. This is noticeably easier on the PS2 version, considering the game only supports 2 players in multiplayer, as opposed to 4 in other versions.
  • Though somewhat difficult, it is possible to break off an opponent's tire on the DS in order to unlock Jurassic Attack. The way to do this is to use Head-to-Head or Stadium Racing and ramming into an opponent repeatedly after they have finished, while being careful to position so that the truck does not cross the finish line or push the targeted opponent out of reach.
  • An "ultra shortcut" can be performed in Coastal Construction.[2]
  • In the PSP Version of the game, both War Wizard and Black Stallion are missing the cables that connect the shocks to the axles.
  • Spike Unleashed, Backwards Bob, Spitfire, and Original Grave Digger are not featured in the unlockable videos. The game shows Air Force Afterburner having one but watching the video it's supposed to be in reveals that Air Force Afterburner is missing from that video. In all cases besides the US Air Force Afterburner, this was due the trucks having yet to receive televised Monster Jam appearances. Video of Showroom 3 including the Air Force Afterburner can be found on YouTube.

Trivia[]

  • Spike is shown having a blue chassis in-game, which belongs to Brutus. The truck never ran a blue chassis as the truck's chassis (Brutus 1) was repainted black.
  • This game was the only piece of official media to reference Spitfire, due to Monster Jam receiving a cease and desist from the Royal Air Force over the truck's name. The truck would later be renamed Dragon's Breath.
  • In the beta versions, Blacksmith was shown with a Jolly Roger flag, which the truck only ever ran at the World Finals, in 2005 & 2006.
  • In the PSP version of Brooklyn Nights, the start/finish line is opposite of the PS2/Wii version.
  • In the beta versions, the ramps were given stars and stripes designs, but in the final product, the colors were inversed, and the stars were removed.
  • So far, this is the last time that the main three 2Xtreme Racing trucks, which were the only 3 they had at this time (Bounty Hunter, Scarlet Bandit, and Iron Outlaw) have appeared in a Monster Jam video game.
  • In attract mode (if the player stays idle in the title too long), it will show Grave Digger dirty in the urban tracks, however the only time the player can get dirty is in the stadium.
  • This was the first Monster Jam video game to feature:
  • This was the final Monster Jam video game to feature:
    • Iron Outlaw
    • Pastrana 199 (retired in 2009)
    • Scarlet Bandit
    • Team Suzuki (retired in December 2008)
  • This was the only Monster Jam video game to feature:
    • Devastator
    • Spike Unleashed
    • Spitfire Monster Truck
