Monster Trucks Wiki

Gas Monkey Garage (Also known simply as Gas Monkey) was a 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee monster truck owned by FELD Motorsports, based on the shop of the same name, which is featured in the Discovery Channel TV show Fast N' Loud. The truck was primarily driven by BJ Johnson, but has also been driven by other drivers on select occasions, including Joe Sylvester and Linsey Weenk.

History[]

2016[]

Gas Monkey Garage debuted on January 16th at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California with BJ Johnson behind the wheel.

In February, after Johnson suffered an injury, Josh Hintz would drive the truck in Fargo, while Joe Sylvester would drive the truck in Arlington and Oakland.

Johnson would return to drive the truck at World Finals XVII. During the show, both truck and driver would be defeated by Morgan Kane in Grave Digger, crashing in the process, and would also finish 31st in freestyle. Meanwhile, Gas Monkey Garage would make a special appearance on Fast N’ Loud, where it would perform a car crush exhibition in front of the shop.

2017[]

Gas Monkey Garage competed on FS1 Championship Series East. Johnson and the truck would be invited to compete in Monster Jam World Finals XVIII, where he would have a much better performance in racing, make it all the way to the semi-final round, only to be defeated by Tyler Menninga and Grave Digger, however, would finish last in freestyle.

That same year, the truck was released in diecast form by Mattel, however, was criticized for missing the pin stripe, headlights and taillights.

2018[]

Gas Monkey Garage competed on Stadium Championship Series 4. During the series, Johnson and the truck would win three overall event championships; one in the series’ opener in Toronto, and two in Oklahoma City. The truck would also win the racing competition in the second Toronto show.

The truck would later be invited to compete at World Finals XIX. Although Johnson would be eliminated in the second round of racing by Jon Zimmer in Dragon, he would have higher success in freestyle, finishing tenth.

In July, the truck made its final competition appearance in the United States in Stafford Springs, Connecticut.

2019[]

Gas Monkey Garage competed exclusively on the International tour.

In April, Linsey Weenk would drive the truck for events in South Africa as a fill-in for Johnson, due to him having to help construct new trucks for FELD Motorsports. The truck would make its final appearance at Sao Paulo, Brazil on December 21st.

2020[]

The truck was slated to compete on the International Tour again however would be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Shortly thereafter, Johnson would announce his initial retirement from driving (Although he would return to driving the following year in Wild Card).

Trivia[]

  • Gas Monkey Garage is the first of two trucks to be created by Monster Jam to be sponsored by a Discovery Channel show, the second being BroDozer.
  • The body of Gas Monkey Garage is based off of the 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee project by Gas Monkey, which shares a similar paint scheme to the truck.
  • Gas Monkey Garage was originally supposed to debut in Houston on January 9th, 2016. However, the Houston Texans won the AFC South title that year, so the January 9th Houston show was postponed until January 24th. This resulted in Gas Monkey Garage debuting in Anaheim and wouldn't even compete in Houston.
  • Despite not competing anymore, the truck remained on Monster Jam's website until being removed in 2022.
